The Third Dance

Niv Sheinfeld and Oren Laor, partners in art and life, are returning to Prague for the third time to broach extremely personal subjects. Their “Third Dance is willing to risk everything”, to quote a critic. Fifteen years of working and living together have led them to a reflection on love, immortality and the personal need of recognition. Romantic dance gestures, Mahler’s sentimental music and a basket of flowers are some of the cliches which comment on their shared artistic past, the “show” which binds them together. In a space as open as possible and a close proximity to the audience, the compassionate gestures of their mature bodies reveal their personal histories as well as the truth about time and love.
The Third Dance is inspired by an eponymous choreography created by a pair of prominent Israeli choreographers, Liat Dror and Nir Ben Gal in 1990. It is the second remake of a famous choreography which Niv and Oren subject to artistic contemplation (the first one was A Two-Room Apartment from 1987). Thirty years ago, choreographers Liat Dror and Nir Ben Gal defined certain characteristics which still remain iconic features of Israeli dance today. Niv and Oren explore these characteristics from their own contemporary viewpoint.
Niv Sheinfeld and Oren Laor have been cooperating since 2004 and rank among the most significant Israeli contemporary dance artists. Niv Sheinfeld started as a dancer. He spent five years in the Liat Dror & Nir Ben Gal company. Afterwards, he worked on independent projects and currently, he cooperates as a choreographer with other companies. Oren Laor studied theater in Tel Aviv and cooperated with the foremost Israeli directors. Hence, their shared work is an intersection of dance and theater which reflects personal experience and motivations as well as social and political themes. Their dance style is a bridge to a more traditional concept of movement and at the same time, it opens itself to fresh forms of expression while drawing inspiration from “high art” as well as popular culture.
