This guided tour will offer an overview of the barracks buildings, with a view towards its placement within the structure of the city, its architectural layout and aesthetic compositions, and the reasons why it was built in the first place.

Participants will hear a brief history of barracks architecture, from the first Roman buildings all the way to the present. Together, we will identify the similarities and differences between historical barracks and the building in Karlín. We will explore the influence of a building’s function on its form and the influence of a building’s architecture on its users. We will also see how a change in a building’s use affects its layout and aesthetics. And together we will try to find the best possible use for the Karlín Barracks.

 

Dorota Kluska studied architecture and urbanism at the technical university in Wroclaw, and has been active in Prague as an architect since 2006. In 2015 she founded her own architectural studio, which focuses on private and commercial projects.
