v_nitro / druhé patro (second floor)

Curated by: Radek Wohlmuth

The term “inner self” encompasses the rich inner world of an individual, encompassing their thoughts, feelings, emotions, and subjective experiences. In contrast, “interior” serves as a politically constructed instrument of power, inherently involving the suppression of individuals or groups deemed undesirable. This clashing shift in meaning serves as the central theme of the exhibition project Second Floor, set within a building in the heart of Prague, a structure that has been under the control of the National Security Corps for over five decades. Once-ordinary spaces like police offices, meeting rooms, and interrogation rooms are transformed into a battleground where the personal clashes with the political, the intimate with the public, and freedom confronts totalitarianism. The artists presenting their unique visual interpretations within this space represent a blend of middle and younger generations. Their artistic journeys are diverse: some followed formal art education, while others were moulded by graffiti, street art, or the techno scene. Their artistic expressions are multifaceted, primarily utilising traditional media such as drawing, painting, and sculpture. However, the exhibition transcends these conventional forms, encompassing installations, interventions, and projections as well. The basic approach is site-specific – an immediate response to the environment and genius loci of the building. Each artist handpicked the location for their work, creating a labyrinthine experience. The unplanned connections and interactions and the building’s somewhat disorienting layout add another layer of depth to how the exhibition is understood and interpreted. The project curator is Radek Wohlmuth.
