Cinema of Transgression is a movement of independent American filmmakers that formed in the mid-1980s around the artists Nick Zedd. His manifesto The Cinema of Transgression, published in 1985 in his magazine Underground Film Bulletin, separated the new generation of underground filmmakers from the structuralists and academics. In Manhattan’s Lower East Side, a community of artists, filmmakers and musicians came together who, against a backdrop of porn theaters and omnipresent heroin, gave birth to a unique and visually and conceptually distinct movement. Punk, porn, violence, evil, humor, and hyperbole – recorded on low-budget Super-8 (and later) VHS. Powerful images with expressive camera gestures and omnipresent filth and ruin are a testament to American underground film from the late 1980s and early 1990s.
As part Cinema of Transgression, every day we will be showing a new film by a filmmaker or artist related to the Cinema of Transgression movement – films by Nick Zedd, Jon Moritsugu, David Wojnarowicz, Richard Kern, and Jeri Cain Rossi.
