Cleaning lady mistakenly throws out art
How to exhibit and preserve contemporary art
- Wednesday Oct 7 / 18:00, Desfours Palace
How were Ján Mančuška’s installations, preserved only on photographs, reconstructed for his posthumous retrospective exhibition? What problems did the Moravian Gallery have to deal with when preparing an exhibition of modern art? How immortal is video art? These and other questions will be raised in a public discussion on the little-explored issue of preserving and exhibiting works of contemporary art, which by their very nature are less “permanent” than classic works of art. They often containing organic materials or plastic, are specific to a particular time and place, or the original has been replaced by a copy. On the Czech art scene, these problems have become urgently felt especially since the 1990s generation of artists. Suddenly the question is not just HOW, but primarily WHAT to preserve or restore.
