Club Guy & Roni
(the Netherlands – Israel)
Alpha Boys
In 2004, 4 + 4 Days in Motion presented Club Guy & Roni and its outstanding piece of choreography Language of the Wall, with performances from six ‘strong women’, distinctive dancers and artists. Alpha Boys is a male version of this piece and analogically tells the stories of men who spend their time dreaming in a bar, where they form an affectionate, humorous, and sometimes violent brotherhood. They all want to change their lives and to shine. The production goes in depth, even though it sometimes draws on familiar social clichés, such as weapons and alcohol, to examine the concept of the new anti-hero / metrosexual. This is an ironical, brilliantly danced study of the world of men that reveals the delicacy and fragility of the male soul and its discovery of freedom through women’s attributes such as pumps and blond wigs. Alongside outstanding dance and acting performances the production features a riveting rhythmic accompaniment from the percussionist Jens Bouttery.
Choreographers Guy Weizman and Roni Haver come from Israel and have Jewish-Arabic roots. The duality of their background is reflected in their work, which tries to shift, provoke, and prompt discussion. Personal liberation is a periodically recurring theme in their work. Following an inspiring dance career with the Batsheva dance company, Ultima Vez, Galili Dance and other companies, they founded Club Guy & Roni. Since 2004 the company has been continuously developing a repertoire with a powerful mark of authenticity. The combination of physical and dramatic language has a strong impact on relatively young audiences. Their dance language is grounded, direct, and multilayered. Club Guy & Roni present Dutch and Israeli dance culture, successfully representing it around the world.
