Yasmeen Godder (Israel)
Singular Sensation
Do we still have the ability to feel authentic emotions, realize what we really feel at a certain moment? Is in our narcissistic hyper-information age room for real feelings? Where do we have to go, what do we have to undergo to have our body react in authentic ways again? A world-famous choreographer and five excellent dancers offer us the outcome of their brave and disquieting study on shifting the bounds of one’s own lethargy. Get ready for a roller coaster ride!
Yasmeen Godder was born and raised in Jerusalem, and moved to New York with her family at age eleven, she graduated from the High School of the Performing Arts in New York City and then at Tisch School of Arts at NYU. Her student projects inspired respect and were presented abroad. One of them, “a car and a bench” was premiered in Prague’s Duncan Centre (1997). Since 1999 she has been living in Israel, where she creates with support from major cultural organizations choreographic works “like i feel funny today” and “Green Fields” (2000), “Sudden Birds” (2002), "Yasmeen Godder and the Bloody Bench Players present: Strawberry Cream and Gunpowder" (2004). In 2005 Godder duet produced the UNDER2 for the Mattanicola ensemble in Berlin co-produced by Sasha Waltz & Guest. Her major work I’m Mean, I am (2006) was supported by the Berlin theatre HAU and Paris Centre Nationale de la Danse.
Most recently the Yasmeen Godder Studio has been opened in Jaffa, a home for all of her activity and projects, which other than creation and rehearsals include classes, workshops and collaborations with "Search Engine"- the school for theatre and creation, headed by her partner Itzik Giuli.
Yasmeen is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Bessie Award, and enjoys support from many major cultural foundations worldwide.
“In the piece, Godder pushes acute body awareness to the forefront of viewers' consciousness. Watching the presentation, it is possible to imagine that this was the way humans behaved before they acquired speech to help obscure the language of their bodies.”
