SILO THEATER /NL/CZ „Kultivar“ The creation of site specific projects was written on the birth certificate of 4 days festival since the beginning. The festival asked Silo Theater to be directors and curators this years project. Together with Czech artists they will tailor the space of the Agricultural Museum to ask the audience and passers by the crucial questions of cultivation – what truly influences our identity? How does society and culture affect us? Do we need to cultivate our appearance further or bring it back to nature? The artists of Silo Theater work with theatrical installations, also being sensitive and experienced practitioners in the field of anthropologic research of the given theme, place and artistic community. The unconventional creative method of Silo Theater will be complemented by native artists from various artistic disciplines.
The Silo Theater originated from a group of multidisciplinary artists living and working in the Graan Silo, Westerdoksdijk, Amsterdam. Originally a grain silo, this 100 year old building situated on the bank of the river Ij was squatted in the late eighties. Home to about 40 artists, it became a hive of multicultural underground activity, including its own restaurant, gallery, bakery, & workshops. After a long, and many would say unjust, battle with the city government, the community was evicted in 1998 to make way for expensive apartments.
However, Currently based at the ADM in west Amsterdam, Silo Theater have continued their work and have created many extra-ordinary theatrical installations and site specific projects around the globe.
