THADDEUS
PHILLIPS & „El Conquistador“
The portrait of a Columbian peasant who decides to leave his land and find work as a receptionist in a near-by unnamed Latin American city mirrors the history of the conquest of the New World and brings the consequences of this turbulent past to the present day.
American actor and director Thaddeus Phillips succeeds in combining brilliant acting, puppetry and film projections and captures the rhythm, class differences and drama of contemporary Latin American society.
The production originated in Casa Des Artes in Bogota in cooperation with Columbian television personality Viktor Mallarino and other exceptional performers who through a multimedia videophone guide Phillips´ acting skills to create this original solo performance.
Thaddeus Phillips is known as an ingenious whirlwind of a performer. His solos at La MaMa have included very original puppet version of Shakespeare "King Lear" or "The Tempest". In 1999, with Tea Alagic, he appeared at La MaMa in a multimedia play, "The Filament Cycle“. His production, "Lost Soles" (2001), was a saga of a tap dancer who escaped the mob by fleeing to Cuba and got stuck there during Castro's takeover. He toured worldwide as creator and performer in "The Geometry of Miracles" directed by Robert Lepage.
This year, El Conquistador ran successfully for several weeks off-Broadway in New York.
“If you watch Thaddeus Phillips
on stage, you’ll have the same feeling as though you were
on drugs”.
“Thaddeus´ puppet version of King
Lear, his water adaptation of The Tempest, his extravagant
Lost Souls or his multimedia The Filament Cycle – these
are all performances that place him among some of the most
creative artists of alternative theatre in Philadelphia.
