Jo Strømgren Kompani (Norway) „The Convent“
Central European Premiere
In a distant valley, somewhere in the Alps, three nuns enjoy the peace and solitude of their own little convent. Their daily meditation of singing and diet of dry bread and fresh water brings them closer to God. However, a harmonious life is a very fragile thing – just like a pact with God. And so life becomes much more difficult as one develops a greater hunger. The latest production “The Convent” clearly demonstrates the characteristic style of the Jo Strømgren Kompani; a natural combination of dance and theatre with the actors´ remarkable physical styles complemented by an original verbal technique – an artificial incomprehensible language narrating emotional contents (this time in a Swedish/German dialect).
Jo Strømgren made his debut in 1994 after graduating from the Norwegian National Ballet School. Three years later, he worked as a dancer and choreographer in the Carte Blanche Dance Company, and later worked with a series of other prestigious companies such as the National Norwegian Ballet, the Cloud Gate Ensemble, the Wiener Statsopernballett, Helsinki Dance Company, and the Iceland Dance Company. He is also currently engaged in directing theatre and opera, in addition to creating dance pieces for his own company.
The Jo Strømgren Kompani was established in 1998 in Bergen and has travelled to more than 80 countries all over the world with its extensive repertoire. The company has become famous due to its exceptional style of movement, its expressive theatrical imagination and its invaluable association of experimentation and comprehension that has been appreciated by audiences and critics worldwide.
