With irresistible charm, Sarah Hugentobler conducts a polyphonic composition drawn from her constantly expanding archive of voices. Genres collide across the work: music video meets classical violin, excursions into music theory meet pop hits, and AI-generated voices mingle with private conversations. Digital and analog fragments merge into hybrid soundscapes balancing on the fine line between virtuosity and amateurism. With a touch of bashfulness yet unwavering sincerity, Hugentobler’s video personas reach toward grand emotions: is it about love? About music? About performance? But who is actually conducting whom? This meticulously composed collage poses humorous questions about authenticity, virtuosity, and our increasingly intimate coexistence with technology.
Sarah Hugentobler
Swiss performer and video artist based in Bern. With precision and humor, she constructs surreal environments where voices, bodies, and images interact, blend, and mirror one another. Straddling the digital and analog worlds, her practice combines video and pre-recorded audio with live performance. Through lip-syncing techniques, she channels various voices through her own body, bringing the visual language of her video works onto the stage. She holds a BA in Fine Arts and an MA in Theatre and Performance from the Bern University of the Arts (HKB). Her video works have garnered multiple accolades, including the Swiss Art Award (2010), and have been featured in numerous exhibitions and art collections.
