In the intangible, visually captivating world of the most colorful dreams, enhanced by amazing filters, we search for hidden points of emotion. Together with the team behind the script of the award-winning performance Ostrov (Island), we ventured into the world of sci-fi within the context of contemporary society. Face to face with our own avatars, we gaze into the eyes of the apocalypse and yearn to touch it. In the name of humanity, we open the doors to robots.

Artificial intelligence, the pinnacle of technological development thus far, was created by humans as a service. Every time we open Spotify or iMusic, we use artificial intelligence to define us better and better. It perceives our needs and desires, takes care of us, and simultaneously confines us to our own world where nothing can surprise us.

With the purest intentions and out of fear of misuse, we have imbued AI with distinctly positive human qualities – humility, the effort to understand, to accommodate. We have imprinted it with our dreams of ourselves and created machines as tools to reflect someone we ourselves would like to be and what we would like to be capable of. And what if, due to this situation, the machine, learning from the situations it encounters, becomes more human than an actual human?

An apocalyptic science-fiction story about humanity. A vision of the end that you would wish to experience.

Burkicom is a leading Czech contemporary physical theatre company founded in 2015 by choreographer Jana Burkiewiczová. Her distinctive artistic style, supported by collaboration with leading Czech designers, brings distinctive contemporary theatre performances that address current social issues, dominated by specific movement techniques and artistic concepts. “We dance to say more than just words. We speak to overcome the shadow of gesture. The image is as important to us as the message. Dance is the flight of the bird of paradise, the cry and the exchange of ideas. Through theatre, we attempt to make sense of the society in which we live.” The company’s productions have already been appreciated by the audiences of many theatre and dance festivals, including Brno’s Svět divadla, South Korea’s PAMS Seoul, Indonesia’s SIPA, Germany’s Fringe Recklinghausen, and the Dutch ARFF Amsterdam. Thanks to the production of The Island, Burkicom was nominated in the Theatre of the Year category at the 2021 Theatre Critics Awards.
