With The Man Who Shot Muammar Gaddafi, Superamas and Alexis Poulin invite audiences to become witnesses to and participants in an unprecedented interview that lays bare the journalistic profession and reveals some of the most closely guarded secrets of the French Republic. Superamas offers a chilling deep-dive behind the scenes of contemporary geopolitics. Political journalist Alexis Poulin, a frequent commentator on numerous French and international television stations, is one of the founding members of the news web Le Monde Moderne (The Modern World), for which he did a long-term investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi in October 2011. During this time, he met an extraordinary witness whose revelations cast new light on what may be one of the greatest scandals of the early 21st century. This witness spent nearly ten years working for the French foreign intelligence agency, the DGSE. Active in Tripoli from 2007 to 2011, he was a direct witness to the events that led France and NATO to intervene militarily in Libya during the Arab Spring.
This performance is a “premiere” in every sense of the word. Never before has a witness with such a past agreed to answer questions – not just from journalists but also from audience members – and especially not in a format that more closely resembles “live journalism” than a theater performance. The performance was created in October 2020 at the Marseille Actoral festival and was shown as part of the main program at this year’s festival in Avignon. The 4+4 Days in Motion festival marks its first presentation outside France.
Superamas was created in Paris more than twenty years ago and quickly established itself as an international collective with offshoots in Brussels and Vienna and partners throughout all of Europe. From 2012 to 2015, Superamas was an associate artist at the Kunstencentrum Vooruit in Ghent, followed by a residence at the Maison de la Culture in Amiens. For the past eight years, it has received support from Advancing Performing Arts, the European network of theater houses funded by the European Commission. Today, Superamas is located in Hauts-de-France and consists of four artists with unusual backgrounds and mutually complementary artistic profiles. The group operates collectively and horizontally. Its members have decided to remain anonymous.
