Osamu Okamura (architect and editor-in-chief of the journal ERA 21):
A house without a roof, a window into the sky
The courtyard of the House of Applied Arts on Národní třída has a unique retractable roof that can be smoothly opened and closed using a clever mechanical device. Two seemingly incompatible wants have accompanied humanity through the centuries – the need for shelter from the elements and the desire to have 'the blue sky overhead'. This has given rise to unusual architectural and technical designs.
Ing. arch. MgA Osamu Okamura was born in Tokyo and now lives and works in the Czech Republic. He graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University in Prague (dipl. arch. Alena Šrámková) and the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (dipl. in conceptual work Miloš Šejn). He publishes and lectures on the subject of Japanese architecture (FF MU in Brno). He is editor-in-chief of Era 21, a professional journal of architecture that focuses on the architectural scene in Central Europe and especially the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and that has also devoted special issues to Slovenian, Polish, Hungarian, and Austrian architecture. Alongside architecture it also covers socio-ecological projects and site specific art.
