Head to the Vršovice park to discover a tower that evokes a factory chimney, a totem and a signpost. It seems as though it has found its way here across centuries and between the worlds of games and reality.
In their installation Who sows the wind reaps the storm, Jakub Musil, Lucie Polášková and Vojtěch Vaněk create a work of art inspired by the aesthetics of game elements. Their tower of blocks looks as though it could stand in a computer game and would fit into various scales and historical periods.
The starting point for the trio was a simple game with blocks. These are often among the first building materials that children get their hands on. The principle of stacking them applies in both real and virtual environments: entire worlds can be built in Minecraft in the same way. The artists chose hollow cubic blocks, incorporating architectural motifs inspired by industrial aesthetics and Neo-Gothic architecture into their walls.
The combination of these elements opens up a search for a universal architectural language that can function across environments, scales and historical periods. Familiar shapes become part of a structure in new contexts, while its origins and historical period remain open to interpretation. The installation, which develops the Polospánek cycle, in which the artists connect their experience of video games with physical space, also functions as an imaginary signpost in the Vršovice park. The destinations one can set off towards from it, however, are not determined by the surrounding places, but by chance in the form of the current wind direction, which turns the weather vane at its summit. Sunlight passing through the stained glass in red, green and blue – the primary RGB colours – also transforms the appearance of the object. Movement, chance and the surrounding environment thus become part of the logic of the building set.
