Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts (IND)
Aadhaara Chakra, a Dancelogue
- Sunday May 19 / 19:30, Archa Theatre
This original dance, audio and film excursion into the world of Indian villages, marketplaces and busy city streets marks the first time an Indian ensemble has performed at 4+4 Days in Motion. In the history of Prague’s post-1989 cultural life, the performance is unique in terms of its extent and significance.
The performance is a visual spectacle presenting the (for “Western civilization”) seemingly pointless conflict between the perception of traditional and contemporary Indian dance. Jayachandran Palazhy, artistic director of the first-rate Attakkalari dance centre, says of the ensemble’s full-evening performance: “At the outset, there was the endeavour to explore the experiences of contemporary Indian cities.”
Through a poetic travelogue, the performance aims to show that modern India is more than just Kathak dances; the performance also includes cinematic snapshots and sounds of the contemporary, modern ways, including videos and short site-specific performances that the dancers experienced on their journey.
The performance’s multidisciplinary nature is underscored by the collaboration of French-Canadian scenographer Dominic Dube, who lives in Bangalore, German filmmaker Rupert Schwarzbauer, French lighting designer Pipon and Japanese digital designer Ken Furudate.
The internationally acclaimed Indian dance ensemble from the Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts – established in 1992 and funded in part by the prestigious Ford Foundation – is one of the most progressive artistic ensembles in India. It is actively involved in the teaching, development and study of contemporary movement arts combining religious, secular and international influences. The Attakkalari Centre regularly collaborates with foreign artists. This is its first performance in the Czech Republic.
