Festival 2022

Press release 5. 10. 2022

4+4 Days in Motion presents an exhibition of contemporary art,
dance performances, theater, and concerts

Some sixty contemporary artists, international performance ensembles, concerts, film screenings, workshops, guided tours, and a program and workshops for children – this is the twenty-seventh edition of the 4+4 Days in Motion international festival of contemporary art with the subtitle “To Be Someone Else, Somewhere Else, Sometime Else.” This year’s festival is held at Erpet Smíchov, the Archa Theater, and the Savarin Riding School. The opening ceremony is this Wednesday, 5 October at 6pm, and the festival runs until 16 October.

This year’s center of activity is the former Erpet Smíchov sports center and its surroundings, which is the site for much of the festival’s exhibition. Curated by Gabriela Kotiková and Denisa Václavová, the exhibition presents works by artists such as Alena Kotzmannová, Anna Hulačová, Dominik Gajarský, Dominik Lang, Eva Koťátková, Hynek Alt, Jiří Černický, Jiří Thýn, Krištof Kintera, Laďa Gažiová, Markéta Othová, Pavla Sceranková, Josef Bolf, Rafani, Vasil Artamonov, and dozens of others. The opening reception on 5 October features musical accompaniment by DJ Mardoša.

“This year’s exhibition space is specific in that it is a former sports facility from the 1980s that includes an indoor golf training facility with grass, artificial trees, and so on. We nevertheless decided to work with this somewhat obscure venue, and most of the artists created site-specific pieces with this place in mind. I think that it will be a big surprise for visitors,” explains curator Gabriela Kotiková.

The exhibition isn’t the only thing bringing new life to Erpet. The diverse daily program offers a series of performative lectures by a group of artists from DAMU, a Pulsar & Spolk dance performance, an immersive project by the Dana&Jana Resuscitation Corps, the Czech premiere of the drama Home Is Where the Pain Is, a fast fashion workshop with Lennia G., and a night of music with Karolina Beranova, Jiný Metro, StayJ, The Valentines, and 2L8. The cinema-café at the Erpet bar will host screenings of the Jim Jarmusch films Mystery Train, Night on Earth, and Coffee and Cigarettes. The closing ceremony features a concert by Tonya Graves, held on 15 October in Erpet’s artificial landscape.

Jiří Sádlo will present a walking tour titled “From the Church in Zlíchov to Císařská Louka, the Imperial Meadow,” Adam Gebrian will discuss the architectural history of the Vltava shoreline on a boat cruise, and Kamila Lohrová and Tereza Vohryzková invite you on a guided tour about water. For a unique shopping experience, head over to the Nový Smíchov shopping mall to see Michał Sawiński’s performance The Dream in a Supermarket.

The Archa Theatre and Savarin Riding School will be hosting numerous renowned foreign projects, including Italy’s Motus and their performance of Tutto brucia, which was inspired by Euripides’s Trojan Women; British comic and artist Kim Noble’s Lullaby for Scavengers; Lavagem by Brazilian artist Alice Ripoll and Cia REC,  a group of artists from the ghetto; Canadian  choreographer Frédérick Gravel’s Fear and Greed; Continuum by Belgium’s Johannes Bellinkx; and Frame by Spain’s Eléctrico 28 performance ensemble. The opening reception of Ctibor Bachratý’s exhibition of photographs of Divadlo SkRAT at the Archa Theater features a concert by Slovak band Požoň Sentimental.

“Kim Noble is an incredible performer with an incredible performance, a perfect combination of theater, television, film, and humor. On top of that, his is currently one of the most in-demand multi-genre performances at European festivals. Tutto brucia is a forceful exploration of an absolutely current topic with fantastic set design and expressive acting and dancing. Also, make sure not to miss Frédérick Gravel, an excellent dancer and choreographer with a live band that performs, among other people, with famous Canadian musician Pierre Lapointe,” adds festival programmer Pavel Štorek.

Every year, the festival also keeps younger visitors in mind. For children, we have The Little Mermaid by Divadlo B, Goldilocks and the Three Bears by Loutky bez hranic, family workshops, and our traditional creative workshops organized by Do You Have a Knack for Art?
